Review: 'Christmas at Carrington's' by Alexandra Brown (2013)

Carrington’s Department store is thrown into a spin when the staff learn that a hot new reality TV show is to be filmed in-store, featuring the formidable retail guru, Kelly Cooper. Georgie Hart, in charge of Luxury Handbags, is reluctant, but quickly realises that the show could give Carrington’s a new lease of life. With Christmas around the corner, she’s also hoping that the season will deliver her the perfect Christmas present, in the form of Tom, the store’s dishy boss.

When the film crew arrive, things start to go wrong. One of Tom’s old flames, Zara, is working on the show and then, to top things off, Tom and Zara are sent off to Paris and New York for a spot of extra filming. When Georgie settles down in front of the box to watch the first show, worse it to come – Georgie is shown in a far from flattering light and she is horrified to learn what Tom has been up to.

Georgie fears this is turning out to be the worst Christmas ever, but Santa might have a got a little surprise in store for her stocking this year – but she’ll just have to wait until Christmas to find out!

One of my favourite releases of 2013 has to be Alexandra Brown’s wonderful debut novel ‘Cupcakes at Carrington’s’ (click here to read my review). If you haven’t read it yet, be sure to pick up your own copy soon because it is a must-read for any chick-lit fan! Not only does it mention ‘cupcakes’ in the title (there are some seriously yummy recipes at the back of the novel as well!), it features an absolutely lovely heroine named Georgie Hart, a fantastic BFF (the gorgeous Sam) and GBF (the hilarious Eddie), and the story is set at a department store I wish I could visit in real life. When it was announced that a Christmas sequel would be released in December 2013, I was over the moon! I was lucky enough to receive a review copy of the book (thanks so much, Alexandra!) and I looked forward to sitting down and reading about Georgie’s new adventures at Carrington’s!

Georgie Hart is at a happy place in her life: she has a job she adores working at the department store Carrington's (the luxury handbag department), she has some amazing friends, and she is slowly falling in love with the incredibly handsome Mr. Tom Carrington himself. However, her life is suddenly turned upside down when she, completely out of the blue, sees herself starring in a new reality show on TV. She finds out Carrington's will star in a new TV series in which the store will get a complete make-over. It all starts of like a bit of fun, but when Georgie can't get along with the presenter of the show and there's no way for her to talk to Tom because he is constantly abroad filming spectacular scenes in all kinds of exotic locations with very attractive women, Georgie starts to worry that the upcoming Christmas days might not be as happy and festive as she had hoped they would be.

What makes this series by Alexandra Brown so amazing is the brilliant cast of characters at its core. Georgie Hart is undoubtedly one of my favourite chick lit heroines and I can’t get enough of her. She’s friendly, sweet, and definitely relatable to female readers. Next to Georgie, there are her best friends Sam, who owns the cafe in Carrington’s and knows how to make any kind of yummy sweet treat, and the hilarious Eddie, who is so fabulous it almost sparks off the pages, and there’s of course the handsome Tom, who is not only Georgie’s crush but also the owner of Carrington’s. In this sequel, there’s a great storyline revolving around a reality TV show being filmed in order to boost the department store’s sales and hopefully attract more customers. It turns Georgie’s life around within a short amount of time, and I couldn’t stop reading to find out about everything that was happening at Carrington’s!

Alexandra Brown has an easy, quick-paced, and descriptive writing style which I love and she has managed to create a perfect fictional world in which I’d like to set foot every single day of the year (even though I have to admit, the Christmas sparkle and glitter definitely gave it all that little bit extra!). ‘Christmas at Carrington’s’ is a wonderfully festive and addictive novel which I thoroughly enjoyed. This sequel establishes the Carrington’s series as a must-read for all chick-lit fans, and I sincerely hope there will be more adventures of Georgie and the gang to look forward to in the future!
