Review: 'Ring in the New Year' by Holly Tierney-Bedord (2016)

It’s a new year and there’s a wedding to plan! Pastry chef Ariadne is busy choosing the perfect venue, the perfect dress, and, of course, she’s busy fine-tuning the perfect cake recipes for the big day. Her happily-ever-after is in sight, until the biggest bombshell that could be dropped comes crashing down on her wedding plans. Just when she thought she’d finally found happiness, she’s left devastated.

With her family, career, and future on the line, Ariadne has everything to lose. Can she bounce back from this and have the life she deserves, or will she find herself alone?

During this first week of January I always need a bit of time to get back on track with 'regular' life after the holiday season. However, it's nice to have some fiction to slowly leave all the December festivity behind, and I've been lucky to have some New Year's Eve novellas to sit down with! I was curious to pick up 'Ring in the New Year' by Holly Tierney-Bedord, because Holly contacted me earlier in 2016 to review one of her stories, so I was glad to check out this one that I had been saving specifically for this suitable time of year!

Ariadne and Jess are in the process of planning their wedding and especially Ariadne can't wait to tie the knot with the guy she's head over heels in love with. But it seems they have to wait a bit longer until their happily ever after, because Jess' ex-girlfriend Laurel brings some bad news: she's pregnant, and Jess is definitely the father. Ariadne is shocked and doesn't know what to do. Should she still marry Jess or is this something that is simply too much and she needs to give up her dreams of ending up with the love of her life?

'Ring in the New Year' is the sequel to author Holly Tierney-Bedord's 'Right Under Your Nose: a Christmas Story', and in this novella we get to read about main character Ariadne and the lead-up to her marriage to her boyfriend Jess. I didn't read 'Right Under Your Nose', so the characters and story were all new to me. While this novella can be read as a stand-alone, I do think I would have enjoyed it more if I knew the background story and what the characters had already been through together. While the reader is provided with some background details, I still felt a bit lost every now and again.

The story is an interesting one, filled with lots of drama for just a short novella. I have to admit I was curious to keep on reading, to see what would eventually happen to Ariadne and what her future would look like, but perhaps the drama was a bit too much for me. Nevertheless, this novella was a fun read and it caught my interest to read more of author Holly Tierney-Bedord in the future. 'Ring in the New Year' is a quick, drama-filled novella with a good dose of romance; for me it was a fast-paced read to start the new year with!
Rating:7,5/10
